We are a diversified producer and marketer of coal primarily to major United
States utilities and industrial users. We began mining operations in 1971 and,
since then, have grown through acquisitions and internal development to become
what we believe to be the fourth largest coal producer in the eastern United
States. At December 31, 2007, we had approximately 712.8 million tons of coal
reserves in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West
Virginia. In 2007, we produced 24.3 million tons of coal and sold 24.7 million
tons of coal of which 25.9% was low-sulfur coal, 13.2% was medium-sulfur coal
and 60.9% was high-sulfur coal. In 2007, approximately 93.4% of our medium- and
high-sulfur coal was sold to utility plants with installed pollution control
devices, also known as "scrubbers," to remove sulfur dioxide. ... More ... |
